“The best thing for the industry,” Chael Sonnen reacts to rumours of Conor McGregor’s return postponed to 2023
Chael Sonnen- Conor McGregor
Looks like MMA Legend Chael Sonnen is not fond of Conor McGregor being in the mix of matchmaking when he is not even scheduled to return yet, and that is only for the better reasons pertaining to the future of matchmaking. Sonnen retired from the sport of MMA 3 years ago with his last fight being a knockout loss at Bellator MMA Grandprix semi-finals to former UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
Sonnen, a former multiple-time UFC title challenger, now talks about various things related to MMA on his Youtube channel whose subscriber count is 1 million strong! Sometimes, his topic of interest would be UFC megastar McGregor himself, who is often anticipated to return by the fall of this year but seems like fate has a different timeline for the comeback of “The Notorious.”
Chael Sonnen names Oliveira, Cejudo, Volkanovski and many more who share one common aspiration- to fight Conor McGregor
On his Youtube channel, Sonnen reacted to a rumour initiated by his friend and former colleague in sports media, Ariel Helwani from MMA Fighting, who said that McGregor is most likely to return in 2023. If that rumour is supposed to be true, McGregor will then be making his return in nearly after 2 years.
“Conor McGregor’s return might be held off until 2023- that’s the best thing for the industry,” says Sonnen followed by giving his reasons for saying so. “As soon as I heard that I thought ‘oh my goodness if Conor is kicked… we don’t have to do the guessing game, we don’t have to do the back and forth,’ do you know how much easier it is going to be to make fights for the balance of 2022?…
I mean you know how many guys I could tie back to an active public interest in fighting Conor McGregor, who behind the scenes if they really felt there was some momentum here would try to deflect anything else that came their way. The best thing that you could possibly have for matchmaking the sport right now … is that [if] there;s no Conor McGregor,” concludes Sonnen.
Sonnen indicated several names that have fixed paths but would never throw away a McGregor fight on their way to prove his point, which included the likes of Henry Cejudo, Charles Oliveira and Alexander Volkanovski. There are several other names that have their eyes solely fixed on McGregor such as Michael Chandler and Jorge Masvidal. Who do you think McGregor is likely to return against if he is to come back in 2023?
