Joe Rogan is a successful podcast host and also works as a commentator in the UFC. The scoring rules for MMA have been in controversy for quite some time now because of various controversial results and alleged early stoppage by the referee.

Joe Rogan, in his recent podcast, with UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and discussed the UFC scoring rule. Joe gave his take on the podcast and said judges should consider whether damage was significant or ground control. There have been various discrepancies abut scoring a fight and what constitute as a winning performance. The main point of debate has always been damage vs control. Rogan made a case for damage and said, Damage should be analyzed over control in a round.

Chael Sonnen gave his take on the issue and said that he agreed to Joe’s stance and said: “I’m with Sterling and Joe and I’m well aware what the rule is. I don’t know that I fully agree that Joe misspoke and that Sterling himself didn’t know the rule. Perhaps they did… Now look, I’m well aware the rule says that it’s damage over control, but that is extremely speculative. That is very open for interpretation and how much damage takes precedence over how much control.”

Chael pointed out that Aljamain won his last fight against Petr Yan by controlling Yan and not causing enough damage to him. Despite his lack of damage, Sterling won the fight and Chael pointed that simply counting strikes may not be the fairest evaluation of damage.

Joe Rogan has faced criticism from various sports analysts over his recent comments on changes in scoring rules of the UFC. Joe is one of the prominent personalities in MMA and many analysts are sad that he is not aware of the Judging criteria. Rogan has been part of UFC since UFC 12 in 1997, and he’s the promotion’s star color commentator for U.S. pay-per-views.

Severe MMA‘s Sean Sheehan talked about Joe’s comment in his recent tweet and said Joe is not aware of the judging criteria because the same changes that Joe was talking about were made in 2016. Sean said: “Just so happens those are the EXACT changes which happened in 2016 and have vastly improved judging, with a lot of people, like Joe, seemingly unaware.”

Many other analysts, like Luke Thomas from Showtime Sports, also criticized Joe Rogan and said it is unfortunate that sports personalities are not familiar with rules of the sport.
