MMA Legend Chael Sonnen is one of the many people to agree with undefeated UFC Welterweight Khamzat Chimaev’s head coach Andreas Michael who thinks Chimaev’s reckless style of fighting may not work among the best of competition in the long run of time. Chimaev, who has been hit only twice in his first four UFC fights, fought formerly #2 ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns in his fifth fight where he was hit 119 times significantly.

Although Chimaev secured the win against Burns via decision at UFC 273– thanks to a couple of takedowns and knockdowns- Chimaev’s head coach Andreas Michael was absolutely outrageous about Chimaev’s anti-cautious attitude of fighting between rounds 2 and 3. This was addressed by the coach after the fight on numerous media appearances, coupled with his Instagram post dedicated to the breakdown of the fight. The fight, however, is going to be the fight of the year contender as well by the end of 2022.

“[He thinks]’I hit the same technique on absolutely everybody’, so he had a good idea that it was coming. Turns out he’s prepared for it. I’ve gotta mix it up. And that’s what I saw Chimaev do. And yes, that’s a dangerous way to fight, for sure… Anybody that goes into a shootout that is a long-term plan does not generally equal an undefeated MMA record. It’s just who can get to the target first.” [h/t Mirror]

What do you make of Sonnen’s assessment of Chimaev in the alignment with coach Michael, do you think he is right? Who do you think Chimaev should face next? UFC President Dana White once said that if Chimaev won against Burns at UFC 273, which he did, he would now be eligible to fight #1 ranked welterweight Colby Covington next, however, no follow up has been made that would indicate working a deal for that fight.
