“Trying to understand it”- Charles Oliveira claims taking his briefs off did not affect his weight at all

It seemed that there was nowhere to go but upwards for Charles Oliveira after his victory over Michael Chandler and successfully becoming the UFC Lightweight Champion. Unexpected road bumps, often come along in long journeys like that of Charles’s but no one could have seen him being stripped of his title after losing to the scales. That’s exactly what happen today as the Brazillian missed weight by 0.5 lbs at his weigh-ins for UFC 274.

This weekend is a rather precarious ordeal as the only person eligible to walk away with the title is Justin Gaethje if he’s successful in his outing against Oliveira. An Oliveira victory will result in him being able to keep his current #1 Contender spot and fight for the title later on, presumably against the winner of Dariush and Mackachev.
Throughout his interviews after the incident, Charles was adamant to make the point that, “the Champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira” establishing that missing weight won’t make him feel any less of a champion. In an interview with Megan Olivi right after he stepped off the scales, Charles was asked how difficult it was to cut down the final 0.5 pounds to which he replied, “I did everything I could, as soon as I found out, that happen, I did the team room, worked out trying to get rid of the weight” emphasizing that a champion cannot affords such leisures and that he needs “to work on it”

Charles Oliveira went to deep waters to cut down 0.5 lbs

Oliveira continued, “I made weight on Thursday but regardless a champion continues to work and goes until the end and I tried to do everything as I am a professional and I am a champion” claiming he went to hell and back to meet the demands of the weight class.
Charles then shared an oddity that occurred during his second attempt at the scales. He said, “I had my briefs on where it was one weight, I took them off and it was the same weight!” finding it difficult to grasp how that happen (Since briefs worn during weight cuts are usually heavy due to the sweat accumulated on them)
He ended the interview with the same sentiment he started with, saying “The champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira”
