The UFC’s submission record holder, Charles Oliveira, defeated Beneil Dariush at UFC 289. Once again, ‘Do Bronx’ proved why he is a high-caliber fighter with his dominant performance. It was a record-breaking night for the former champion, who became the record holder for the most post-fight bonuses in history. He also earned a title shot against Islam Makhachev.
Other than breaking records, Charles Oliveira kept his focus on Islam Makhachev. Oliveira has always talked about his desire to rematch Islam in many interviews. This time, he intends to leave the arena with the title, unlike his time-fighting Makhachev. Before leaving the Rogers Arena, ‘Do Bronx’ did not hide his strategy for the upcoming championship fight.
During the post-fight interview, Charles said he would do anything different like the last time. He wanted to fight as the same Oliveira to avenge his loss against Islam Makhachev. A reporter asked him what difference he would bring in the rematch, and he replied, “Nothing… I will simply be Charles…. nothing.”
The last time Charles Oliveira fought against Islam Makhachev at UFC 280, the Dagestanian showed complete dominance against the Brazilian fighter. Later in the second round, Oliveira got trapped in an arm-triangle choke and lost the bout. Charles refused to watch the replay of that loss to focus on the fight against Beneil. Earlier, Makhachev’s coach claimed that ‘Do Bronx’ may not get the title shot even if he wins.
Charles Oliveira gets the title shot according to the UFC President
Earlier, Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira claimed they would get the title shot with a win. Nevertheless, Dana White didn’t make any official announcements. Instead, White gave a dicey statement on whether they would get the title shot.
However, after being impressed with Charles Oliveira’s victory, Dana didn’t just praise him, he handed Oliveira the next title shot. White said, “He looked like a world-beater tonight, and I’m excited for him and Islam to fight again.” The UFC president also confirmed that an official announcement on this topic would be made on Tuesday.
Charles Oliveira was on an 11-fight winning streak before fighting Islam. He faced defeat at the hands of the Dagestani fighter but returned to prove his worth as a championship fighter in the co-main event of UFC 289. He has cleared out the division except for Makhachev. Only time will tell if Oliviera can regain the title.
