Former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira surprised everyone by conducting an interview in English following his impressive victory at UFC 289. After a setback last October, Oliveira bounced back on Saturday night, ending Beneil Dariush with a first-round TKO. Not only did Oliveira reclaim his momentum, but he also set a new UFC record for the highest number of finishes, totaling an astounding 20.

As anticipated, the Brazilian fighter, known as ‘Do Bronx,’ wasted no time in calling for another opportunity at the championship belt. This time, however, he delivered his message in a rare fashion, speaking in a language other than his native tongue. In a post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier inside the Octagon, he humbly apologized for his limited English proficiency, much to the delight of the Vancouver crowd. Charles Oliveira graciously acknowledged, “I’m sorry, my English is not very good. Thank you so much for the support”. Nonetheless, he confidently declared, “The champion has a name, and it’s Charles Oliveira”.

In contrast to his uncharacteristic display against current champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 280, where Oliveira felt unable to fully demonstrate his capabilities, he experienced a newfound sense of rejuvenation in his fight against Dariush. Through his translator, he emphasized, “… Last time, you saw only ten percent of what I can do. Now, you witnessed 120% of my abilities. The champion’s name is Charles Oliveira. And guess what, Dana? I’m next in line for the title”.

UFC 280 took place in Abu Dhabi, a location where Dagestani fighters like Makhachev feel at home. Nevertheless, Oliveira expressed his willingness to travel to Russia if necessary to fight Makhachev on his home turf. Fearlessly, he proclaimed, “If you want me to fight him in his house, I’ll go. I’m prepared for that challenge. Let’s make it happen. I’ve always believed in my abilities, regardless of what people say. My focus remains on what I can do, and I will continue to prove myself”.

During the post-fight press conference, Oliveira revealed that he had begun learning English to better connect with his fans. This dedication further exemplifies his commitment to reaching a wider global audience and engaging with his supporters on a deeper level.

Before his loss to Makhachev, Charles Oliveira had been on an incredible winning streak of 11 fights. His victories included notable triumphs over former interim champions such as Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, and Dustin Poirier, as well as former Bellator titleholder Michael Chandler. It is worth mentioning that eight out of those 11 wins earned Oliveira post-fight bonuses. At UFC 289, he secured an additional $50,000 for his exceptional performance. Moreover, Oliveira holds the remarkable record for the most submission wins in the UFC, with an impressive tally of 16.
