Zhang Weili and Sean O’Malley showcased their exceptional skills at UFC 292. They won their respective bouts and delivered dominating performances over their opponents.
Weili defended her strawweight title against Amanda Lemos in the co-main event of UFC 292. She left no room for doubt, dominating the fight both standing and on the ground. For her remarkable performance, Weili earned a well-deserved $50,000 bonus. UFC President Dana White announced this during the post-fight press conference.
In the main event, Aljamain Sterling faced Sean O’Malley in a highly anticipated match-up. Sterling, the former bantamweight champion, was expected to utilize his grappling skills to overcome O’Malley’s superb striking abilities. The first round was closely contested, with both fighters trying to find their rhythm. O’Malley thwarted Sterling’s takedown attempt in the second round and landed a devastating knockout punch.
At the post-fight press conference, the reporter asked Zhang Weili who she would like to fight next after her successful title defense. She jokingly replied that she would take on Sean O’Malley for her next fight. “Sean O’ Malley, how about this,” she said in Chinese. Weili is the first UFC Champion from China. She secured her title in 2019 at UFC Fight Night 157, and her performance at UFC 292 marks the second run of her title reign.
Sean O’Malley becomes the new UFC bantamweight champion at UFC 292
Sean O’Malley’s precise right-hand strike sent an advancing Aljamain Sterling crashing to the canvas. The referee promptly intervened, resulting in a TKO victory for O’Malley. O’Malley’s ascended the throne as the new bantamweight champion.
Following the fight, Sterling expressed his strong desire for an immediate rematch with O’Malley. Now that O’Malley holds the title, Sterling claims he is unbothered regarding the result. However, he believes it would set the stage for an enticing showdown.
Looking forward, the bantamweight division promises a series of captivating matchups. O’Malley has mentioned his preference for a title defense against Marlon Vera. However, the UFC may not lean in the presence of Merab Dvalishvili, the division’s top-ranked fighter. With such talent in the division, fans can anticipate an exciting lineup filled with competitive battles.
