The Sandman’s main criticism circled around the difference in the number of significant strikes landed by the two. He also observed that O’Malley was able to overwhelm Chito via various feints. Sandhagen had previously beaten Vera at UFC on ESPN 43. He said that O’Malley won almost the same kind of way he beat Chito.

In the co-main event at UFC 299, O’Malley defended his bantamweight title against Vera for the first time. Vera endured through all five rounds but ended up getting dominated by O’Malley’s impressive striking. Sandhagen also said that O’Malley’s speed advantage was obvious and that Vera struggled to fire back before O’Malley left range.

During an interview with James Lynch, O’Malley’s coach revealed that he tried to shake Vera’s hand and give him some encouraging words. However, Vera reportedly dismissed Tim Welch’s gesture and told him that they would never be friends. However, Welch said he would not hold it against Vera as it is normal to feel bitter after getting “your a** whooped”.

Vera criticized O’Malley’s coach for his behavior and said that he simply wanted to “keep it real”. He said Welch had a mediocre MMA career and now talked trash and was trying to live through O’Malley.
