UFC welterweight Colby Covington is back again, leading the MMA headlines after his fight announcement for UFC 296. Covington is set to face welterweight champion Leon Edwards for the 170-pound belt. In his latest interview with James Lynch, Covington shared his thoughts on this matchup and provided a confident front ahead of his fight. But, the highlight of the interview came when Covington challenged lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Further, he also mentioned UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In the interview, Covington said, “He is fighting in a little boy’s weight class, and I’m talking about Islam Makhachev. He’s fighting in a little man’s weight class, he’s fighting little midgets and he barely beats them. Split decisions, split draws, it’s just pathetic.” Covington continued, “Khabib was scared of me. He didn’t want to come to welterweight because of me. So even his daddy knows it’s not smart to come up to welterweight.

Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, on many occasions, has stated his aspirations of competing for the welterweight title. Makhachev believed that he held an edge over Leon Edwards and could possibly be the double champ. The Dagestani fighter is set to defend his lightweight belt against Charles Oliviera at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.

However, the MMA fans can put a pin on this matchup. Both Covington and Makhchev will be involved in the title fight and can decide their own fates. A welterweight showdown could be on the way if both fighters win their respective fights.
