“Don’t know what pound for pound means” – Colby Covington gets called ‘R-word’ by Jorge Masvidal for dissing Dagestani champ Islam Makhachev

Despite not being listed in the top 15 of the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings, Colby Covington believes he is the best fighter in the organization. During an interview on UFC Embedded, the controversial welterweight contender emphasized his conviction in his superiority. Jorge Masvidal, the former BMF champion, had some words for him.

Covington, known for his fiery personality, maintained that his claim to the #1 slot was based on his distinct approach to the fight game. He emphasized his refusal to shed weight while having a steak. This is what he said: 

We eating good, baby. I don’t cut weight though, I’m a real fighter. I fight at my natural weight class because I know I’m the best fighter in the world, I’m not a weight bully like Islam Makhachev who has to cut all that weight to have an advantage over midgets and beat those guys up. That’s why I’m the number one pound-for-pound fighter on Earth because I fight at my natural weight class.

Covington alluded to himself as a “real fighter” who competes in his natural weight class, as opposed to others he described as “weight bullies” such as Islam Makhachev. He claimed that Islam Makhachev drops weight to get an edge over smaller opponents.

As of yet, Colby Covington has no UFC championship or a position in the pound-for-pound rankings. He felt his fighting style and dedication to his natural weight class made him the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.

Jorge Masvidal takes a jab at Colby Covington for dissing Islam Makhachev

Jorge Masvidal, renowned for his fiery personality and heated rivalries, recently turned to social media to dish out heat against Colby Covington. Masvidal’s comment was in response to Covington, who stated that he was the number one pound-for-pound fighter. He had also dissed Islam Makhachev for being a “weight bully.” 

Masvidal and Colby share a history. Their story was sad as best friends became worst enemies. Colby Covington got the upper hand in their grudge match, defeating Masvidal. After the fight, Masvidal allegedly attacked Covington, resulting in a lawsuit against Masvidal.

The enmity between these two still exists, and they wasted no opportunity to take a jab at each other. This time, Masvidal retaliated on Instagram. This is what he stated when Covington claimed to be the number one pound-for-pound:

Masvidal’s dig at Covington and simultaneous defense of Islam Makhachev has fight fans enthralled. However, the back-and-forth jabs between Covington and Masvidal will probably keep on going for the foreseeable future.
