Colby Covington has shown keen interest in a potential showdown with Islam Makhachev, firmly believing it would be a one-sided affair in his favor. While currently expected to face Leon Edwards for the welterweight title, Covington envisions the possibility of eventually defending his belt against Makhachev.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Covington spoke about the potential matchup, describing it as an enthralling storyline and a massive fight. He confidently stated, “You keep acting like you want to come up to daddy’s division, Colby Covington’s division, then you’re going to get smacked in the face. I love it, I mean if you look at storylines you know you got the USA vs Russia angle. It’s a big fight but it’s not a competitive fight. I beat him pillar to post, he can’t handle me at wrestling, he definitely can’t strike with me. It’s an easy fight.”
Unshaken in his conviction, ‘Chaos’ firmly believes that the fight won’t pose any significant challenges for him. He is confident in his ability to overpower Islam Makhachev through his wrestling skills and believes Makhachev’s striking won’t be enough to match his own, ultimately leading to a straightforward victory.
Colby Covington reacts to Islam Makhachev calling out Leon Edwards for the welterweight belt
Earlier this week, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev expressed his desire to face Leon Edwards next in a tweet, fueled by the prospect of becoming a double champion. However, Makhachev’s callout didn’t receive the response he expected. Instead of a matchup with Edwards, he was scheduled to fight Charles Oliveira in Abu Dhabi.
Colby Covington dismissed the callout as a mere joke, stating, “I was laughing. It just looked like a desperation play. It looks like Islam’s afraid to defend his title against Charles. So that’s what it looked like to me. Obviously we know that, it wasn’t Islam that was tweeting. That was that rat scumbag Ali Abdelaziz.”
Notorious for tweeting on behalf of his fighters to generate buzz, Ali Abdelaziz has been involved in such tactics. Although there’s no concrete evidence, many fans speculate that Covington’s suspicion might hold some truth in this situation.
