Colby Covington will face welterweight champion Leon Edwards, at the the UFC 296 main event. This title match is to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 16. Meanwhile on the same card, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja will face Brandon Royval, in the co-main event. Edwards, the champion is currently at #4 in the pound-for-pound rankings, according to ESPN.
Covington on the other hand, has no official ranking in the listing due to inactivity. This was due to a post-match scuffle with Jorge Masvidal. Now, the fighter has talked about a Dustin Poirier pairing. In the lead-up to the matchup, Covington has named his wishlist of fighters. They have included the likes of lightweight king Islam Makhachev, to Conor McGregor.
He has labeled the lightweight champion as the money fight while commending McGregor as one of the biggest names in the promotion. While he has been dismissive of Edwards, he looks forward to it. One other name thrown into the mix was Poirier. Speaking to UFC.com, he said:
A guy by the name of Dustin ‘Soreier.’ He’s the one that got me kicked out of my old gym by crying and having feelings. I would love to square up with Dustin ‘Soreier,’ but he’s afraid of me and he’s afraid of my shadow. I’ll never get to fight him because he’s just scared.
At 21-3, 1 NC, Edwards is fresh off a two-win streak; the latest being by way of a majority decision at UFC 286. This was against co-contender and pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman. Covington served as the backup for their consecutive face-offs, thus earning him to be cued in for a title shot. He has not fought after a win over Masvidal at UFC 272.
The former UFC interim welterweight champion had been a peer to Poirier, at the American Top Team (ATT). Conversely, he blames ‘Diamond ‘ for his exit. Now, the fighter yearns for a dream fight with the former teammate, after having parted ways.
