Any time a potential Conor McGregor return is brought up, fans can hardly contain their excitement and fervour at the very potential of his comeback.

However, one of the biggest question marks about his comeback isn’t who he is going to fight, but at what weight class this might transpire. McGregor has in his career contested at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight– however, his real exploits came in the two former divisions, wherein he was able to become the UFC’s first concurrent double champion.

Since his leg break against Dustin Poirier, however, the Irishman has put on a lot of muscle size in anticipation of his return to the sport. Hence, fight fans have speculated that 155 pounds, already a hard enough weight cut for “The Notorious”, will be an unlikelihood in the event of his return. Welterweight looks like the most obvious destination for the star’s return, having last fought in the division in 2020, when he took on Donald Cerrone.

Now, it seems like McGregor has come out and asserted his desire to fight in a heavier division – that is, the middleweight division (185 pounds). He wrote, on Twitter, “I’m gonna give middleweight a go at some point 100%.” Another tweet read, “I’d be a big fridge at middleweight. But like, hot oven, same time, ye know yourself, catch it on PPV. Don’t know tho. It be hard work. Those rounds against those middle/lhw they were alternating fresh each round. I’ve put in psycho work doing this job over the years.

Never one to shy away from a steep challenge, Conor McGregor has, thus, asserted his willingness to move up in weight and try and fight the mincing 185-pounders. However, there is a huge physical disparity that he will face when he moves up.

Although he has packed on unparalleled levels of muscles in his bid to move up, the one thing that might trouble him against the likes of Israel Adesanya or Alex Pereira, or even Robert Whittaker and Darren Till will be the severe height disadvantage that he will encounter.

At 5’8”, he will make for the shortest middleweight around – even Robert Whittaker, who seems a little undersized for the division, has a height of about 5’11’’. Against the taller fighters, like Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira, who are both 6’4’’, he might run into a huge problem.
