Conor McGregor confirms his return to the UFC will be with a fight in the Welterweight division
McGregor's stablemate, Leon Edwards is the current welterweight champion.
After months of anticipation, Conor McGregor has revealed much-needed details about his expected 2023 return to the octagon. While his manager has dropped hints and trails here and there, at a recent Twitter AMA session, McGregor revealed a lot of major details regarding his return.
Since UFC 264, McGregor has been out of action after he broke his tibia during the closing seconds of the first round in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. As such injuries take a long time to heal, speculation about a McGregor return all but died down for the rest of 2021.
During his absence from the octagon, McGregor seems to have bulked up a ton with many questioning if he’ll make the lightweight limit again. During today’s AMA session, Conor confirmed that his return would “Definitely” be to the welterweight division. Previously Conor has fought Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone at Welterweight.

Who makes the most sense for Conor McGregor at Welterweight?
Previously he displayed a great longing to become the first ever Tri-divisional UFC Champion, with him wanting his third belt to come at welterweight. Back then it was Kamaru Usman who reigned as champion and was enthusiastic about a fight with McGregor. However, things have changed drastically now.
While there are certainly favorable pairings for McGregor at welterweight the problem lies in that the current champion, Leon Edwards is a stablemate of McGregor’s under Paradigm Sports. It is highly unlikely the two would be paired against each other while still being represented by the same people.
However, another fight at welterweight that can open a lot of doors for McGregor is the fight against Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal is nowhere near the levels of fame he boasted of in 2019, back when a fight between these two was first proposed.

However, despite his issues outside the octagon and inconsistency inside it, Masvidal has one thing going for him. He’s only one fight removed from having been in two title fights, meaning anyone who beats him has a valid place in the title contention picture.
The UFC are not conservative about the rules they’re ready to break if it means the McGregor money keeps flowing in and hence this would be an opportunity they may not want to lose.
