Former two-division champion Conor McGregor has expressed his astonishment at the recent elevation of Islam Makhachev to the number one spot in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings. McGregor has raised suspicions about how the Russian fighter managed to attain this prestigious position. He referenced a previous doping incident involving Islam and the banned substance.

In response to the news of Makhachev’s rise to the top of the pound-for-pound list, Conor McGregor has pointed to Makhachev’s past violation following his 2015 loss to Adriano Martins. During this event, he tested positive for meldonium. McGregor took to his official X account to share a photograph of Makhachev following the knockout defeat.

Islam Makhachev had faced a potential suspension from competition due to this failed drug test. He was eventually exonerated by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). They concluded that he had inadvertently ingested the banned substance “without fault or negligence.” This absolved him of a retroactive suspension.

Chael Sonnen questions Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler matchup

Chael Sonnen recently shared his perspective on the rather uncertain situation revolving around Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler. It was noteworthy that McGregor reentered the UFC’s drug-testing pool. He is on track to make his comeback next year.

Both McGregor and Chandler have a history of competing in the lightweight division, at 155 pounds. However, they have recently discussed the prospect of facing off in a middleweight bout. MMA veteran Chael Sonnen found this particularly weird and so did many other people.

Never in history have we had a fight where we don’t have a weight class…That simply does not happen. There’s venues, there’s a lot of things… we don’t have a weight class and still don’t have a weight class.
Chael Sonnen on MMA Junkie

The absence of a clearly defined weight class has indeed left the fight community in a state of bewilderment. However, Chael Sonnen did not stop at discussing weight divisions. He also raised questions about Conor McGregor’s motivation at this point in his career. Sonnen believed that financial gain might be the driving force behind McGregor’s desire to continue fighting.
