Conor McGregor is the biggest superstar in the UFC. His charming demeanor, quick wit, sharp tongue, and great skills made him extremely marketable. The Irish fighter recently vied for an imminent return to the UFC octagon. The former two-division champion directly urged Dana White and UFC brass to finalize plans. McGregor targeted a fight date in June for his long-awaited comeback.
McGregor pleaded with the UFC to set him to fight in June of this year. Conor McGregor specifically called out Hunter Campbell to make this happen. The Irishman stated he would prepare after wrapping the promotion for his film debut. This is what he said:
I'm hoping to get it. You can tell Hunter, your man, that you know that is new kind in there to get the ball rolling… So hopefully June 29th, please I'm going get going.Conor McGregor via BackstageOL
McGregor declared he already had his team assembled and prepared for camp. He proposed June 29th as an ideal date to make his UFC return. Conor was expected to fight Michael Chandler last year after coaching The Ultimate Fighter. But the fight never happened after McGregor’s USADA issues persisted.
McGregor is nearing the twilight of his career at 35 years old. He hasn’t won a fight since January 2020 against Donald Cerrone. His last two fights resulted in losses, both to Dustin Poirier. A McGregor pay-per-view would provide the UFC a guaranteed commercial smash hit. It could be well-timed for their expected annual International Fight Week festivities.
Dana White denied rumors of Conor McGregor fighting in June
Dana White shot down Conor McGregor’s claim of fighting in June. The UFC CEO dismissed McGregor’s announced date for his long-awaited return. White made these comments in an interview on The Pat McAfee Show. White said he hoped to set the fight for the fall of 2024. His remarks directly contradicted McGregor’s recent proclamation of fighting that summer date.
McGregor had released a video announcing his comeback against Michael Chandler. The former two-weight UFC champion stated he would face Chandler at 185 pounds. He even named June 29th the targeted fight night for the grudge match. White made clear the promotion had not scheduled any fight involving McGregor yet.
McGregor re-entered the UFC’s revamped anti-doping program in October after taking 2022 off. He was regularly tested again in anticipation of finally booking his return fight. This remains a must-see entertainment whenever McGregor makes his comeback.
