Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are two of the most popular names in the UFC. Both wanted to finish their rivalry with a final trilogy matchup but Dana White was not ready to put it up. The two haven’t been inside the octagon for more than 2 years. Here is what happened:
Conor McGregor was not pleased with White putting down the idea of a potential trilogy fight with Diaz. He talked about it in a recent interview with talkSPORT. McGregor said:
I’ve got the Diaz trilogy, and that’s what I had said for the Sphere. You know, there was cold water put on that in public off the bat and I wasn’t happy with that. I need a discussion or conversation because if I’m not getting anything back, I’ll just drift off. So, I hope I can get something in and get dialled in.Conor McGregor via talkSPORT
The two have fought each other twice and their rivalry is considered one of the most iconic ones on their resume. Fans have wanted to see the duo in a third fight for a while now. Diaz left the UFC in 2022 after his win against Tony Ferguson. Meanwhile, McGregor has been away after his surgery. However, both fighters have been looking forward to potentially making a comeback.
Diaz was seen on X, pushing for a potential comeback by taking on the Irish superstar for UFC 300. Meanwhile, McGregor expressed interest in fighting Diaz saying he would be happy to complete the trilogy although on his terms. However, Dana White firmly rejected the idea of any potential trilogy matchup between the two in the near future.
Conor McGregor wants “real trilogy” fight against Dustin Poirier
Conor McGregor has also expressed interest in a fight with Dustin Poirier again to end their unfinished business and have a “real trilogy” fight. McGregor has plans to fight multiple times in 2024, but not one has been announced by the UFC yet. This has caused a loss of interest in the Irish superstar’s camp as he keeps himself busy with his Hollywood commitments.
If McGregor and Poirier do end up fighting this year, this would not be their third fight but rather their fourth matchup. They have a rivalry that dates back to 2014 when McGregor knocked out Poirier in the very second minute of the 1st round. However, ‘The Diamond’ was able to get his revenge and then some as he came out victorious in their last 2 bouts at UFC 257 and UFC 264. ‘The Notorious’ said that their fourth fight would be the “real trilogy” and intends to finish it off since he believes his latest defeat was not valid.
McGregor is also set to face Michael Chandler in a highly anticipated matchup. His UFC comeback has teased fans for a while now but there seems to be no concrete day in sight. Although McGregor, White, and others have made their vague statements it will be interesting to see who the Irish superstar takes on next in his highly awaited comeback to the UFC.
