“FANTASTIC for both of us,” Cory Sandhagen doubles down on calling for Marlon Vera for the next fight

The way Cory Sandhagen fought last weekend, it felt like he never left the Octagon. After an 11-month layoff, Sandhagen dominated his opponent, Song Yadong at UFC Vegas 60 and won the fight via doctor stoppage in the fourth round. What’s next for him, as you ask? Well, Sandhagen is ready to fight in December, but only UFC’s matchmaking will tell when and who will he fight next.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani at The MMA Hour, Sandhagen talked about his win over Yadong, the injuries he sustained, his take on empathising with fighters after the fight, if Henry Cejudo deserves a title shot, and much more. In the midst of all, Sandhagen also talks about revisiting his callout of “Chito” Marlon Vera during the Octagon interview last weekend for his next fight.

“I think Chito makes more sense man,” says Sandhagen. “I don’t mind a fight with Merab either but, Chito has a lot more pull behind him, he’s coming off a big win against Cruz… he’s finishing people and honestly from what I’ve seen on social media it’s like what a lot of the fans wanna see too…

Marlon Vera, the first UFC fighter representing Ecuador, has made his way through a lot of ups and downs to become possibly the most dangerous bantamweight fighter in the division. He has solid knockout wins over former world champions, Dominick Cruz and Frankie Edgar, and is the only fighter to have a win over Sean O’Malley. But Sandhagen is against the recent notion that Vera should be the next in line for a title shot after UFC 280’s co-main event involving a title fight between the champion, Aljamain Sterling and the challenger TJ Dillashaw.

“I also heard from someone he was potentially in talks for getting a title shot and I was like ‘that guy can’t get a title shot already.’ So I definitely don’t think that should be the case, Chito should definitely have one more, and if it’s against me, that would be fantastic for both of us…”
