“Not risking my ranking”- Curtis Blaydes is not ready to accept an immediate rematch against Tom Aspinall
Tom Aspinall- Curtis Blaydes
Tom Aspinall has become the latest victim of a UFC main event ending in the most anti-climatic manner. His fight against Curtis Blaydes saw exactly two combined exchanges that ended with Aspinall on the canvas writhing in pain.
Of particular note was that this was the second main event in arow to be derailed by an injury, a similar occurrence taking place last week during the fight between Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega. Unlike Ortega, who popped his shoulder trying to escape a submission attempt, Aspinall had his knee shattered off what seemed to be a routine leg kick.
Similar to the featherweight main event last week, this fight also had far-reaching consequences for its division, all of which will remain unanswered for now. Even though their fight met an unfortunate ending, these two athletes had nothing but respect for each other, they shared a chilled beer after the event was over, and they vowed to face each other in the near future.
“As long as I knock out the next guy”- Curtis Blaydes talks about winning the fans back in his next fight
It’ll be safe to say that the heavyweight division is kind of a mess right now. The champion is out because of a knee injury, and former light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones is looking to make his heavyweight debut against Stipe Miocic. Another fight between Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa is booked, and they too are looking to fight for the title.
With a win over Tom Aspinall, Curtis Blaydes wants his name in the title contention, and he won’t do anything that might hurt his chances. Talking to the reporters after UFC London, he said, “I’m not risking my ranking. I won the fight. Heading into this fight, I envisioned the winner, which is me, would be fighting the winner of Tuivasa and Gane. So I’m not going to pass up an opportunity to fight those guys when it’s right there, to wait for Tom Aspinall to heal and run it back.”
“As long as I knock out the next guy, the hype’s back. MMA is like that. You could win four fights in a row, lose a fight, everyone says you suck. You could lose three in a row, win one, and you’re the greatest in the world. So the last fight’s the only one that matters,” Curtis concluded.
