“He’s ready”- Dana White announces BIG PLANS for Colby Covington’s Octagon return
UFC CEO Dana White has his say on Colby Covington's eagerly anticipated return to the octagon
UFC 272 was one of the most high-profile grudges matches the UFC has seen in a while, with Covington taking on friend-turned-bitter foe Jorge Masvidal. Their story can be termed “WWE-esque”, as the two ATT-gym staples went from sharing a room together, going to the grocery with each other, and ascending up the Welterweight ranks to publicly trying to humiliate the other as viciously as possible.
The UFC 272 presser was the best example of this – “You’re a deadbeat dad!” chimed in Covington. The issue many fight fans take to Covington’s hard-hitting trash talk is the lack of boundaries – Martial Arts thrives on mutual respect, and this display by the American is seemingly everything that the sport tries not to be.
in 2017, the UFC had notified Covington of cutting him before heading into his bout against Demian Maia, wherein after defeating the Brazilian, the fighter turned up the ante and delivered one of the most popular octagon interviews ever, saying… “Brazil you’re a dump! All you filthy animals suck!….” Admittedly, according to Colby himself, the move “saved my career.”
Since, Covington has only lost to Kamaru Usman and beaten Jorge Masvidal, Rafael Dos Anjos, Robbie Lawler, and Tyron Woodley.
Dana White responds to a reporter’s question about Colby Covington’s lack of octagon presence
A common quip delivered against “Chaos” is his lack of fights against top Welterweight talent – including the likes of Gilbert Burns, Khamzat Chimaev, Belal Muhammed, and more.
Well, it seems like the criticism has been heard by Covington – who will return to the octagon soon, in Dana White’s own words, saying that “He’s ready! Colby wants to fight. We’re making plans for him soon.” Following a legal battle with Jorge Masvidal, who jumped him at a steakhouse in Miami after their fight, Covington has been away from the limelight and the octagon for around 6 months now.
Although fans have shared images of whenever he is spotted in public, “Chaos” has mostly stayed away from cameras and not spoken to the media about when he might return, or who he might want to take on next.
This news revealed during the post-fight press conference at Dana White’s Contender Series, comes in contrast to what Gilbert “Durinho” Burns had told The AllStar just a day earlier, stating that he’d heard Covington had bad injuries and could be out till March next-year.
Who do you think fights Covington next? And do you think Kamaru Usman’s dethronement means a title run for “Chaos” yet again? Share your views in the comment section below!
