Dana White‘s recent announcement has shed light on a much-anticipated match-up. Conor McGregor will fight Michael Chandler for his impending return to the UFC Octagon.
The duo concluded their role as coach in Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The show currently airs on ESPN and will continue until the middle of August. Post this both fighters were set to square off in the octagon. However, McGregor’s re-entry into the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing pool is still pending. This has led to a volley of questions surrounding his return.
In contrast, Dana White remains highly optimistic about McGregor’s imminent comeback. He affirmed the fact stating, “I talked to Conor, it was either yesterday or the day before, and yeah, he’s ready to fight.” White advised him to get back into shape. He stated they are in the process of sorting things out. In an intriguing twist, McGregor has hinted that the UFC is not particularly enthusiastic about pitting him against Michael Chandler.
Instead, he’s attempted to engage “BMF” champion Justin Gaethje for a showdown. Dismissing McGregor’s assertions, Dana White attributed his statements to McGregor’s tendency for psychological games. He explained, “Conor likes to f*ck with everybody – especially his opponent, or possible opponents”.
Did Conor McGregor challenge Justin Gaethje in place of Michael Chandler?
Conor McGregor wasted no time to challenge Justin Gaethje, right after Gaethje secured the BMF title. In his usual confident manner, McGregor confidently predicted that he would swiftly defeat the newly crowned BMF champion if they were to step into the octagon together. However, Gaethje’s response was a strong and definitive refusal, citing concerns about facing an opponent suspected of using steroids. Naturally, McGregor was quite displeased with this steadfast rejection.
McGregor is currently on a three-year-long winless streak. The UFC had been diligently working to arrange a clash between McGregor and Michael Chandler for the highly anticipated year-end PPV event. Yet, McGregor’s sudden change of heart might redirect his focus toward a showdown with Justin Gaethje.
In contrast to McGregor’s theatrics, Michael Chandler showcased an impressive level of composure. He seemed unfazed by the possibility of their proposed bout falling through. During an appearance on ESPN Chandler calmly stated, “I believe the fight is happening. The fight makes too much sense for it not to happen”.
