Dana White and the UFC had already announced fan-friendly matchups for early 2024. One fight that many expect the UFC to announce is a welterweight title clash between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad. White revealed when he would announce the date and venue for the fight in an interview in Canada.

Muhammad is on the second-longest unbeaten streak in the UFC’s welterweight division. Edwards has the longest active unbeaten streak in the division. Many expected White to announce Muhammad as the next opponent for Edwards after UFC 296. However, White was non-committal. Fight fans feared for Muhammad as they felt the UFC would pass him over for a title shot. However, Belal firmly believed he would get it. Now, White had provided a subtle hint that the fight would indeed happen. However, a section of fans hated the idea of the fight, and they made their displeasure evident on social media.

When Muhammad fought Gilbert Burns at UFC 288, White had promised a title shot for the winner. However, the title fight between Colby Covington and Leon Edwards took a longer time to happen. Muhammad weighed in as the backup at UFC 296 when Covington fought Edwards. The UFC offered Covington a title shot after he weighed in as the backup at UFC 286 when Edwards fought Kamaru Usman.

Recently, fans booed UFC legend Frankie Edgar at a Q&A session in Canada for UFC 297. Edgar voiced support for Muhammad’s title shot, but the Canadian fans did not like it. Muhammad has a beef with Sean Strickland, who is a fan favorite in Canada. Muhammad does not have a lot of finishes on his record, and that made it difficult for the UFC to promote him. However, former two-division champion Henry Cejudo called Muhammad the closest fighter to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
