UFC 288 had a stellar fight as the co-main event featuring former Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira and surging contender Beneil Dariush. However, with Oliveira getting injured Dana White has revealed their intention to book a new fight for the co-main event of UFC 288.
Dana White attended the media scrum after UFC on ESPN 44 and said, “We are working on it now. We are actually working on it tonight. I just told Sean, we’ll get together on Monday but Sean is like I will call you tomorrow. We’ll get it done.” When asked about the possibility of Gilbert Burns fighting in the card, he said, “he (Burns) has been blowing me up all day too. So, probably.”
However, Dana White reiterated that the fight between Oliveira and Dariush will get rebooked for a future event. The fight card of UFC 288 will feature the Bantamweight title fight between Champion Aljamain Sterling and former Champion Henry Cejudo. It will also feature the return of Kron Gracie back to the UFC for the first time since 2019. Kron is the training partner of Nate Diaz and the son of legendary Jiu-Jitsu fighter Rickson Gracie.
The loss of Oliveira and Dariush’s fight had fight fans worried about the PPV card. Considering there are no stellar names associated with UFC 288 other than the title fight, Dana White and UFC will look to pull off a fan-friendly fight to boost fan interest in the event.
Gilbert Burns tells Dana White he wants to fight at UFC 288
Burns, the top-ranked Brazilian fighter in the Welterweight division, has indicated his desire to fight at UFC 288. Dana White revealed that Burns has been calling him about fighting at the card, and they will look to put something together.
In a series of Tweets, he called out Colby Covington and other top contenders in the Welterweight division. He tweeted multiple times about wanting to fight on the Jersey card in May. Despite getting the title backup spot for the next Welterweight title, he wants to fight at UFC 288.
Gilbert Burns is an intriguing fighter who always competes against the best of the best. In a short time, he will have fought three times in the last five months if UFC and Dana White book a fight for Burns at UFC 288.
