UFC and the fans will bid their goodbyes to another legend after 22 years of combat. Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler will fight on the UFC 290 prelims card on International Fight Week. UFC president Dana White revealed that Lawler will face Niko Price at UFC 290 for his retirement fight. The event will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Lawler will also be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on the same weekend.
In an interview with MMA Junkie, Dana White said, “I found Robbie Lawler when he was 19 years old. UFC 290 will be the final fight of his amazing 22-year career.” Robbie Lawler has not looked the same since his fight against Ben Askren at UFC 235. He has only won two of his last eight fights. Fight fans will hope that he can defeat Price to end his illustrious 22-year combat career.
Lawler won the welterweight title at UFC 181. He had the greatest title fight in UFC history against Rory Macdonald at UFC 189. Both Lawler and McDonald will enter the Hall of Fame in the Fight category for their performances. However, Lawler appeared past his prime self in the last seven years. He was able to defeat an older Nick Diaz at UFC 266. Other than that performance, Lawler looked like a shell of his former self.
Robbie Lawler had many ups and downs in his MMA career. He competed in the UFC from 2002 to 2004 in his first stint. He left the company in 2005 only to return in 2013. In the years 2005-13, fight fans saw Lawler as a journeyman fighter. However, he turned his career around in 2013 and won the UFC gold in 2014. Fight fans will surely miss the ruthlessness brought by Lawler in the cage.
Fans blast Dana White’s decision to exclude Robbie Lawler from the main card
Dana White booked the retirement fight of Robbie Lawler for UFC 290. However, fight fans took issue with the booking. They are happy to see Lawler perform one last time in the octagon. However, they disagreed with the decision to put Lawler on the prelims. They took to Twitter to give their views on the decision-making. Check out some of the reactions:
Robbie Lawler has 29 wins and 16 losses in his professional career. He had an extensive career as a fighter. Lawler fought in many promotions and always competed against the best fighters in the world. Fight fans will be interested to see how Lawler performs in his final bout against Niko Price.
