Dana White did not mince words when expressing his deep disappointment with Showtime’s recent boxing event production. The event in question took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where Canelo Alvarez, secured a dominant win over Jermell Charlo.
Dana White, while acknowledging Alvarez’s prowess, held nothing back in criticizing Showtime’s handling of the fight. The UFC CEO bluntly referred to it as “embarrassing.” During a post-fight press conference for Dana White’s Contender Series 65, he openly voiced his disdain. He said, “Again, I could go on for days about their production on Saturday…Showtime, I noticed you tried to do it better, but you guys suck“.
In stark contrast, White commended the exceptional performance of his UFC team. Particularly during their recent event at the UFC Apex. He illustrated the marked disparity in production quality with the speed at which the UFC’s production team incorporated replays. He revealed how in the last few seconds of a DWCS fight, the team put up replays under the instructions of Dana White. “There’s nobody that can disagree with me that Showtime is a horrible, horrible f*cking production team,” he said.
White’s candid comparison underscored the glaring contrast in production quality, with Showtime’s replays receiving his harsh critique. He remarked that their replays were so bad, that the commentators struggled trying to talk about what was going on. Dana White’s forthright assessment of Showtime’s production quality emphasized his profound disappointment in the network’s performance. Meanwhile, he highlighted his unshakable confidence in his team’s ability to deliver a superior viewing experience.
Dana White criticized Showtime Boxing’s Stephen Espinoza
Dana White responded to Stephen Espinoza’s live gate comparisons during the pre-fight press conference for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo bout. Espinoza had confidently stated that the upcoming event was expected to generate over $20 million in gate revenue, marking the third time in six months that Showtime Boxing had achieved this feat. He also emphasized that the UFC had never reached a $20 million gate in its history.
In response, Dana White criticized Showtime’s production quality and downplayed Espinoza’s role in boxing’s success. He remarked that Espinoza had nothing to do with the success of fighters like Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, and Terrence Crawford, who were responsible for drawing significant gate revenue. Borrowing from Conor McGregor, White called him a “weasel” and expressed his view that Espinoza’s attempt to claim credit showed arrogance and delusion.
Furthermore, White found humor in Espinoza talking about “levels” and described Showtime’s fight production as embarrassing. He had previously been vocal about his criticism of Showtime’s production quality and referred to Espinoza as a small figure with a loud voice and a lack of genuineness. White wasn’t surprised by the downfall of Showtime and believed it should have happened sooner. He bid farewell to Espinoza and sarcastically wished him an enjoyable retirement.
