“Cocaine isn’t cheap” – Dana White quips when asked about Oscar De la Hoya’s return to boxing

Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya
Oscar De La Hoya and Dana White are not friends. Since 2017, they have been embroiled in a well-documented feud that began with during the promotion of the bout between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. Initially being friends, Oscar De La Hoya made comments in the vein of the fight being “disrespectful to the sport of boxing” which tickled Dana White, but not in the right way.
Since then, both the promoters (Dana White promotes the UFC, while Oscar De La Hoya has his own promotion company called Golden Boy Boxing), have gone at each other in vicious verbal jabs that have continuously soured their once positive relationship. The issue began with De La Hoya not taking well to a professional boxer taking on a mixed martial artist.
Even before the fight, one of the greatest boxers ever, Mayweather was quite clearly the favorite for the bookies. The fight proved them right, as Mayweather stopped McGregor in the 9th round. Despite all the lambasting by De la Hoya, it is incredible how the Irishman, despite having no professional boxing bouts, punched his own weight for chunks of the match.
The feud was not expected, as the two had shared a sort of bromance before the eventual falling out, as Dana White detailed how he used to “go to his fights and create hype around them.” Apart from calling the 2017 bout “disrespectful”, De La Hoya had some choice words even before the fight was finalized, calling it a “circus.”
However, recent times have given hope for a lukewarm rekindling between the two. This year, De La Hoya publicly reached out to White for a revival of the old friendship. In an interview with GQ Sport, despite calling the apology “sincere”, Dana has no plans to forgive his old chum, adding that “there’s no way he and I can ever be friends again,” and “I appreciate the apology, I get it. We’re fine, but we’ll never be on such good terms again.”
Dana White isn’t interested in being friends with Oscar De La Hoya ever again

On the 27th of March, 2021, De La Hoya announced his intentions of coming out of retirement at 48 years to fight none other than old opponent Floyd “Money” Mayweather. At the time of their fight in 2007, the bout was the highest earning event in boxing, bringing in a total of around $150mn. The obvious reason for a rematch would be to generate as many PPVs as possible – consequently, a big payday for both the fighters.
Dana White poked jest at De La Hoya for the idea, adding “cocaine isn’t cheap, it’s expensive, you gotta make money” to his plans of returning to the ring. Watch the comment in this video:

Looking at the fabulous shape 50-0 fighter Mayweather is in, showcased by his exhibition against controversial YouTuber Logan Paul, De La Hoya might just be thanking his starts he didn’t actualize the plan. Before Mayweather, De La Hoya was planning to fight Vitor Belfort, and in June of this year, he formally pulled out, adding that he “dodged a bullet” by doing so.
