“NEVER had an incident like today,” Dana White reacts to MASSIVE fiasco of UFC 279-press conference due to backstage brawl
Dana White
What happened between Nate Diaz, Khamzat Chimaev and Kevin Holland has led to something that made UFC President Dana White extremely tensed about for the first time in a long time. White has been the face of the world’s biggest MMA organization for over 2 decades and fair enough to say, in a business that is built on bloodthirst competition, White has seen some crazy moments in his life. It seems like the backstage brawl that led to the cancellation of the UFC 279 press conference stands out for the 53-year-old White.
According to multiple sources, what happened was initially UFC welterweight Khamzat Chimaev and his team started a verbal back and forth with fellow welterweight competitor Kevin Holland backstage. The situation included some moments of physical altercations as well and would’ve turned into a full-scale fight if not for former UFC welterweight and longtime athlete manager and coach Tiki Ghosn who got between both the fighters.
Eventually, UFC megastar Nate Diaz’s team arrived and they had their own verbal spars with Chimaev’s team after Diaz was talking to Tiki Ghosn who was standing with Chimaev’s team. Eventually, bottles were reported to have been thrown between such a large number of men that the staff itself wasn’t enough to control the situation. The press conference got cancelled but Holland and his opponent Daniel Rodriguez did take in a few questions.

Dana White says at least 57 people were involved from Nate Diaz’s fight camp in the backstage debacle
In a backstage media scrum, UFC President Dana White gave a go-through on what happened backstage and something surprising came out of his mouth as it’s coming from the one who has been confronting hostile situations between the fighters in almost every fight week since 2001.
“How many years? 22 years long I have been doing this, we’ve never had an incident like today,” said White. “Just all hell broke loose out here. We stopped it but we didn’t do a good job of not letting it happen… just never happened before. We will be ready for it the next time… the Diaz camp showed up with 57 people, Khamzat’s team had 30-something people and then you had multiple guys going on back here. It was crazy…”
So far the video material available is Holland’s UFC 279 opponent Daniel Rodriguez’s Insta story revealing Holland being separated from Chimaev’s team, there’s also a clip getting viral that shows a verbal altercation between Holland and Chimaev’s teammate Darren Till. What do you make of this chaos held backstage? Do you think the UFC has failed time and again in handling the group situations where teams get involved? Who do you think wins on the main card this weekend?
