The high school basketball season is in full swing. And there are official changes to get to know. No matter how much out of place it reads, UFC CEO and taskmaster Dana White is unhappy about it. White is a stalwart in the combat sports bubble; his knack for basketball though, does not go unnoticed. He has had close connections with acquaintances like Shaquille O’Neal and icon Kobe Bryant. The UFC CEO has a customized sneaker collection and once lauded Nike’s commemorative sneaker lineup after the passing of Bryant, an NBA legend.

The promotion’s top honcho recently appeared on The Ultimate Fighter Season 2 Episode 8 of ‘The TRUTH Podcast‘. Before concluding the segment, White went through a few topics. These included a critique of American Culture, responding to ‘woke‘ and ‘cancel-culture‘, and political aspirations. When the topic of the state of Maine came up, here’s what he had to say:

Apparently, there’s a basketball team up there that is incredible…High school or college team, I’m not sure. They are really good, and they’re smoking teams. The state is now going to impose something on them…they’re going to be penalized for blowing teams out of the water! Because they are too good…It’s just unbelievable…these pu**ies, whatever league they are in or whatever they are trying to do…Every one of you that are involved in this, in the state of Maine, that are imposing this thing on this team – you guys fucking make me sick. You are what’s wrong with this country right now…

This comes in light of the 2024 Maine High School Season ruling. Under old rules, teams received free throws for fouls after seven fouls in a half, starting with one-and-one. Automatically going to two after 10. Under new rules, teams will get two free throws for non-shooting fouls after five fouls in a quarter. The foul total will be reset each quarter. White, coincidentally has roots in Maine.

The mention of Donald Trump, a close acquaintance of his, instigated the topic. The state of Maine ruled the Republican Party Nominee intelligible from the 2024 ballot. Trump is an avid MMA fan and has made many UFC walkouts with White. He is therefore naturally protective of the issue of honoring their acquaintance.

A brief history of Dana White and basketball

In January 2001, the UFC was acquired for a reported $2 million, and it subsequently became a subsidiary of ‘Zuffa’. Dana White served as president and later rose to the helm of the company, taking UFC to a whole new level as the premier combat sports promotion and outlet.

Alongside, White also owns Power Slap, a premier combat-striking/slap-fighting promotion. White has other revenues of interest as well, which include Professional Bull Riding.

Other than that, he also has a knack for basketball.

White is a huge fan of the Los Angeles Lakers’ small forward LeBron James. White once praised his work ethic hugely. Welterweight Colby Covington had once come out of the woodwork and challenged the superstar to a fight after differences in their political views. However, White reaffirmed that James is well respected in the MMA community for his work.

Other than Kobe Bryant, Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal also goes way back. Back in 2005, the 4X NBA champion helped launch The Ultimate Fighter. In 2011, a week before retiring, O’Neal called on to be part of the UFC, which sadly didn’t materialize as such.

However, Shaq did announce a post-fight party at the Encore Beach Club with his millionaire son, Myles O’Neal, and Alexander Volkanovski. This was for Volkanovski’s title defense at UFC 290, and a favor from White to O’Neal.

For Shaq, it was a promise 9 years in the making. For White, it was showcasing his love for the sport and all its elements.
