UFC Vegas 89 saw a bizarre stoppage in the very second fight of the night. The fight featured two Dana White Contender Series signees, Igor ‘Severino’ da Silva and Andre Lima. Severino lost the bout via disqualification after he bit Lima’s bicep in the second round. Surprisingly, UFC CEO Dana White offered Lima a $25k bonus for being on the receiving end of such an act. Now, he doubled his bonus for an unexpected reason.
The bite of Igor Severino was so deep that it left his teeth marks etched in Andre Lima’s biceps. Soon after hearing the news of Dana White awarding him a bonus, he tattooed the teeth impression. Further, he imprinted the words “I got a fu****g bit bonus” as a memoir. Upon seeing the Brazilian prospect’s tattoo, the UFC CEO doubled his bonus. Here is what White wrote on his Instagram story:
I was going to give him $25k. Now, I'm giving $50k. This is awesome.Dana White via Instagram
The UFC also posted a unique bonus on its official pages, which is called ‘The Bite of the Night.’ This fight also had the potential to win the ‘Fight of the Night’ credits. Both Igor Severino and Andre Lima went toe-toe in a high-pace fight. But, due to the biting foul, the fight prematurely ended. This foul garnered references to Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield, where Tyson bit off his opponent’s ear.
The unsportsmanlike behavior from Lima left a sour taste among the fan base. However, Lima tattooing the bitemark and Dana White awarding a $50k bonus eased the mood. This led the fans to celebrate for the Brazilian. But, the other Brazilian, Igor da Silva, had a bad night as he lost an important career opportunity and tarnished his name.
Igor da Silva vs. Andre Lima had Fight of the Night potential
Igor Severino and Andre Lima made their UFC debuts against each other at UFC Vegas 89. A fight between two undefeated fighters always has a high stake. Also, given their DWCS performances, fans paid attention to the flyweight bout. The fight had good back-and-forth action before the stoppage.
As soon as the fight started, Igor Severino pressed forward and put pressure on Andre Lima. Lima wisely counteracted the pressure by managing the distance with his footwork and movement. Both landed strikes tit for tat and engaged in grappling exchanges.
Lima came close with two submission attempts (a Guillotine and an Omaplatta), showcasing his BJJ black belt skills. But Severino escaped them to push the fight to the second round. Two judges scored the first round to Lima, while one had Severino in the lead.
The second round followed the same pattern as the first. However, at the 2:52 mark, Andre Lima, while wrestling against the cage, complained of his opponent biting him. Soon, the referee called a time-out and inspected Lima. Further, the ref disqualified Severino. Not only did Severino miss out on a potential FOTN bonus, but also lost out on a future in the company.
