“I AGREE with Khabib,” Daniel Cormier backs former teammate over recent remarks on Khamzat Chimaev’s weigh-in debacle

Daniel Cormier and Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s friendship goes a long way and you can expect both to back each other when the time comes, no matter how controversial the stance becomes. Cormier and Khabib were together inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, class of 2022. Khabib, the former UFC lightweight champion, retired undefeated with a record of 29-0, 19 wins by finishes. Cormier, on the other hand, is the second fighter to have achieved the status of becoming the simultaneous 2-division UFC champion.
Recently, Khabib came out talking about the weigh-in debacle of UFC’s title prospect in Khamzat Chimaev, who because of coming out 7.5 lbs over the weight limit, got his main-event fight cancelled against Nate Diaz and was therefore made to fight Kevin Holland in the co-main slot. The newly scheduled fight took place at UFC 279 in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas in the last weekend and Chimaev won against Holland via first-round submission.

In one of the videos on his YouTube Channel, Cormier talks about and hails the talent that Chimaev holds, while also empathising with the Swedish-Chechen’s tragedy with the weigh-ins. Cormier complemented on Chimaev being hit only twice in 5 of his 6 UFC bouts and talked to the viewers about how difficult it is to maintain that stat. However, Cormier also responded to teammate Khabib’s recent controversial remarks that constructively criticized Chimaev.
Initially, Khabib said, “I recently watched the weigh-in of Khamzat Chimaev. I followed what was happening with his weight and looked at his team. There are no Muslims around him and this is very bad. Because if you are a Muslim, you need good, strong people around you.“
In response, Cormier said “The one thing that Khabib said that I believe is true, he said the kid [Chimaev] needs more people around him, who are going to tell him, the things that he doesn’t wanna hear. I also agree with that too, you gotta have people, that are willing to say to you ‘This ain’t right dude.'”
