Daniel Cormier believes Kamaru Usman’s defeat at UFC 278 is the worst scenario for “loser” Khamzat Chimaev
Khamzat Chimaev- Daniel Cormier
Top analyst Daniel Cormier believes the result of UFC 278 will hurt rising talent Khamzat Chimaev the most. The former double champ gives an interesting take on “Borz” career leading up to UFC 279.
Khamzat Chimaev will be taking on superstar Nate Diaz in the upcoming pay-per-view event, UFC 279. This will be Khamzat’s first headliner and the welterweight star is on a mission to get hold of the welterweight belt. Following his unanimous decision win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273, things were perfectly set for the fighter on his path to gold. All critics and fans around the world strongly believed that the next welterweight title fight following Usman vs Edwards 2 was going to be between “Borz” and “The Nigerian Nightmare”.
Leon “Rocky” Edwards however spoilt the big party with a last-minute knockout against Usman forcing a trilogy between the two for the belt. In a perfect world for Khamzat and his supporters, Usman winning at UFC 278 meant Khamzat had to get past Nate to fight for the title. Now that the script is completely flipped, Daniel Cormier believes the route to the title will be harder for Chimaev.
Daniel Cormier believes Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz has very little stakes now
In a recent video posted by UFC commentator Daniel Cormier, the former double champ breaks down what the fight between Khamzat and Nate Diaz now means for the Chechen. “I think last weekend he did not understand that he was the biggest loser in Usman vs Leon situation because he was in line. All he had to do was get past Diaz…but with Leon Edwards winning now, we have a trilogy,” said DC in his YouTube video.

Many believe this fight shouldn’t be a challenge for the dominant Khamzat while for the veteran, Nate this could be his final fight for promotion against a rising talent. “That leads to the question, ‘What is this fight for?’ I feel like for Diaz, this fight is for legacy. I feel like, for Chimaev, this is just another scalp on his resume, because I don’t know if this win necessarily puts him closer than he already is to a championship fight,” said DC talking about Chimaev.
Khamzat is currently undefeated and is believed by many to be a future champion. The dominant fighter faced his first real test in the promotion against a former title contender in his last fight and showed great heart to get a stunning win.
