Daniel Cormier Holy Holm Ketlen Vieira
Daniel Cormier comments on an idea of open scoring MMA fights after the recent controversy. The UFC Vegas 55 main event fight between Holly Holm vs Ketlen Vieira was not what fight fans were expecting. The fight was extremely boring as both the fighters were not trying much to do anything. Holm stuck to her strategy of punching and evading but that didn’t help her as at the end Vieira was announced the winner via split decision.
In the post fight press conference, Vieira revealed that he earned her victory as she was the one who was trying to fight. She said
“I think she was doing more of an ‘antigame’ … we use that term for soccer..That’s what she was doing, she was basically trying to neutralize me. She was just pressing me against the cage, but nothing was happening. She just wanted me to stop fighting and I think that the judges actually saw that.”
Daniel Cormier comments on the open scoring concept in MMA
In a recent Twitter interaction a user asked Cormier about his thoughts on implementing an open scoring method.
“What do you think of open scoring“
While responding to the question, the former UFC double champion made it clear that he doesn’t favour the idea.
“I don’t like the idea of open scoring ! ,” wrote DC on his official Twitter handle.
Open scoring reveals how much each judge has scored a fight after each round. While there are advantages and disadvantages regarding open scoring, UFC has no plans to apply it now. With open scoring, fights which are considered to have a controversial decision will be less. Fighters will get to see their scores and it can prompt them to push more in the last round of the fight in order to win.
On the other hand, open scoring will take out all the excitement from MMA bouts and the drama would be less. There is a possibility that In the final round, the winning fighter will try to be more defensive and evade most exchanges. Similarly, there will be no suspense during the announcement of the winner as everybody can count themselves.
