Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier took on the commentary duty for the fight between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko at Noche UFC. The title fight had its controversy because of the scoring. Judge Mike Bell scored the final round 10-8 in favor of Grasso, leading to a split draw. Daniel Cormier posted a video on his YouTube channel addressing the scoring.
Cormier said, “It felt to me like, Mike Bell, I don’t know what he could have watched to score that fifth round a 10-8 for Alexa Grasso. Now, she won the round. No doubt about it, she won the round. But a 10-8 is just, it is honestly one of the worst scorecards I have seen in a really long time.” Daniel Cormier did not like the judging and called for a trilogy fight between the two.
The trilogy fight might take some time as Shevchenko injured her thumb during the fight. Valentina indicated that she wanted the thumb to heal before making a decision on the next fight. On the other hand, Mexico still has an undisputed champion in the UFC. Recently, Yair Rodriguez and Brandon Moreno failed to capture the undisputed title. Hence, Alexa Grasso remains the only Mexican champion.
Daniel Cormier also revealed that the UFC could book annual events honoring the Mexican Independence Day. The event made over $2 million in live gate revenue, and the UFC will look to capitalize on the success. Grasso also proved that her first win over Shevchenko was not a fluke after an impressive performance in the second fight.
Alexa Grasso had an awkward moment with Daniel Cormier at Noche UFC
As soon as Bruce Buffer announced the result, Cormier came to interview the fighters. Immediately, Cormier asked Grasso about the result and the fight. Grasso said she was the winner of the bout. However, her answer led to an awkward moment with DC.
DC reminded her that the bout was a split draw and that she did not win the bout. Technically, DC is correct. However, Grasso did not lose the title in the scenario, and she could have referred to that while claiming to be the winner. It was an awkward moment looking at how Grasso reacted to the situation.
The Noche UFC event had plenty of exciting moments. Raul Rosas Jr. and Daniel Zellhuber nabbed impressive finishes over their opponents. With his dangerous striking technique, Roman Kopylov might become a threat in the middleweight division. All in all, the event gave fans some new fighters to get excited about.
