Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria headlined UFC 298 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. As such, El Matador defeated the long-reigning featherweight champion to claim the UFC gold. The MMA community went berserk since he knocked ‘The Great’ out cold. Now, Daniel Cormier reacted to the main event and blamed the Honda Center for ending Volkanovski’s title reign.
In his latest YouTube video, Daniel Cormier expressed his thoughts about the main event of UFC 298. When addressing the knockout loss of Alexander Volkanovski, he pointed out the bad luck of the Honda Center. He claimed the stadium was cursed since many champions lost their title while defending there. Here is what he said:
That damn place is cursed man! That stadium (Honda Center) is cursed. So many fighters lose championships in that place...Every time somebody goes to that place to win, or defend the championship, for the most part, they get beat. The same thing happened tonight (in UFC 298) to the Great Alexander Volkanovski.Daniel Cormier (via YT-Daniel Cormier)
Although Daniel Cormier made a superstitious claim, he provided some proof. He pointed out a few instances of champions losing their title like Brandon Moreno losing to Deiveson Figueiredo and his own losses to Jon Jones (Decision overturned) and Stipe Miocic. Also, adding to Cormier’s beliefs, his teammate Cain Velasquez also lost his heavyweight title at the same arena. As such, there was some truth to what DC claimed.
Originally, Daniel Cormier was to be a part of the broadcast and commentary team for UFC 298. But he withdrew from it since he had to coach his wrestling team in a tournament. As such, Michael Bisping replaced him in the commentary team along with Jon Anik and Joe Rogan.
Daniel Cormier advises Alexander Volkanovski after UFC 298 loss
Alexander Volkanovksi reigned as one of the dominant featherweight champions in the UFC. Unfortunately, he lost his title to Ilia Topuria in UFC 298. Adding to it, he received a brutal right hand, which put him unconscious on the UFC canvas. As such, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier had some advice for the dethroned champion.
In his YouTube channel, Daniel Cormier addressed the common opinion that Alexander Volkanovski can’t be the same. Having received two brutal knockout losses, it was understandable. However, Cormier still wasn’t ready to ‘write off’ Volkanovski. Here is what he said:
What I do believe he needs is time. He's got to allow for his chin to reset. He needs to step away from this thing and just kind of chill.Alexander Volkanovski (via YT-Daniel Cormier)
While Daniel Cormier advised Alexander Volkanovski to take some time off, ‘The Great’ was keen on getting an immediate rematch. As such, he welcomed the idea of taking the newly crowned champion, Ilia Topuria, to his home country, Spain. However, El Matador didn’t look convinced about a rematch. As such, how Volkanovski’s career progresses in the UFC is to be seen.
