Daniel Cormier on Tony Ferguson vs Li Jingliang

Former UFC Double Champ Daniel Cormier gave his assessment of the upcoming Welterweight showdown between Tony Ferguson vs Li Jingliang. The fight will be a co-main event bout in the UFC 279 card in Las Vegas this weekend.

The fight will be Ferguson‘s move up to the 170lbs division after a very long time. He last competed in the division during his TUF days. After a string of brutal losses in the Lightweight division that broke his dominant 12-fight winning streak. El Cucuy made some changes in his fight camp before the fight.

In recent times El Cucuy has been on a 4-fight losing skid with his last loss coming at the hands of Michael Chandler. This was the first time he was knocked out in his MMA carrier. After such a brutal loss El Cucuy is looking to get back into the win column this weekend.

On the other hand, after a total shutdown by the UFC 279 headliner Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 267, Jingliang bounced back with a win over Muslim Saikhov via unanimous decision back in June. He is 2-2 in his last four fights. The Leech will welcome the former Interim champ in the 170lbs division and is looking to get a win over the UFC vet.

In a recent instalment of the DC & RC show on Espn’s YouTube channel, the former UFC Double champ weighed in on the UFC 279 fight card, they gave their thoughts on the main event clash between Chimaev and Diaz as well as Diaz’s top octagon moments. DC further gave his assessment of the Welterweight clash in the co-main event.

According to Cormier if El Cucuy was knocked out by guys at Lightweight then a move to a weight class up is probably a bad idea for the former Interim champ. He further explained that The Leech is a very hard hitter. DC also stated that if anyone could make a comeback after such a vicious KO it’s El Cucuy.

On the topic, DC stated, “I want to see something positive. I want to see something change – some changes that he has made since he has been to Jackson’s gym, Jackson Wink down in Albuquerque, So I want to see something different. Here’s the issue for me, When you get knocked out at 155 by Michael Chandler when you get TKO’d at 155 by Justin Gaethje when you get dominated by Beneil and Charles Oliveira at 155, it would not seem like going up to welterweight would be the move.”

“But if there is a guy that could let go of the past and everything that happened prior to go and try to make a statement, it is Tony Ferguson. But in Li Jingliang, this guy is tough. He hits hard, and this is a very difficult matchup in his first time fighting at welterweight in a long time.” The former UFC champion further added.

Cormier concluded his assessment on the DC & Rc show by stating, “So while I’m looking for something positive, I don’t expect all that much as of right now. He’s going to have to show me something.”
