Just a few days ago, UFC CEO Dana White announced the main-event fight for UFC 296. The event will headline the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on December 16th. The main event includes Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington for the welterweight title. Just days after the announcement, Leon Edwards made the headlines.
He had a verbal altercation at another promotion with a fighter named Johnny Eblen. Reportedly, Eblen and Edwards shared some words after the former defeated Edward’s brother. Bellator Dublin was hosting Fabian Edwards vs. Johnny Eblen as the main event fight. However, this matchup included a lot of bad blood between the two.
The aggression and the anger were visible to the spectators as the two went against each other. As round 3 began, Johnny Eblen landed a huge right hand that dropped Fabian Edwards to the ground. With some ground-and-pound finishes, he was able to end the fight. However, the champion didn’t stop there, as Eblen showed his frustration over Edwards after his win. Further, this behavior didn’t sit well with Fabian’s brother, Leon.
The UFC champ stepped inside the octagon to make his case known. Both Eblen and Leon got into a verbal spat, and the former indicated to Leon to let him know that he was next. Later, when the heat dialed down, the 31-year-old made his way to Fabian’s corner to attempt a truce. Leon welcomed the gesture with respect.
This altercation could’ve gone wrong, but security controlled the whole thing. Further, Leon’s aspirations to avenge his brother’s loss remain far-fetched, as both Eblen and Leon compete for different promotions.
Leon Edwards is set to make his second title defense against Colby Covington
Recently, UFC CEO Dana White gave a peek at how the UFC is planning to end in 2023. UFC 296 is set to happen on December 16th in Las Vegas. The main event will be welterweight champion Leon Edwards defending his title against Colby Covington.
After the defense in March against Kamaru Usman, the Englishman is set to step into the octagon after eight months. This fight against Covington was in the making for a long time. There were rumors that Edwards was not willing to give the title shot to Covington. However, the UFC thought that Covington was the most logical option for this title defense. The American national is ranked 2nd in the welterweight division, behind Usman.
Further, Edwards will be looking forward to responding to some of Covington’s comments from the recent interviews. Reportedly, Covington has called Edwards a ‘placeholder’ for the welterweight title.
