Gervonta Davis converted to Islam in a ceremony at a Maryland mosque on Sunday. Davis is following in the footsteps of other boxers who have converted to Islam, including Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. Davis said that religion helps people become better human beings and that Islam brings accountability and responsibility. He also said that his Muslim name, Abdul Wahid, means “the servant of the one.”
Davis is a former three-division world champion with a professional boxing record of 29-0. 27 of his wins have been by knockout. Currently, Davis is the WBA Super Featherweight Champion. Tank made his debut in February 2013, at the age of 18. He still trains under the guidance of his longtime coach, Calvin Ford, at the Upton Boxing Center in Baltimore. It was also one of his coaches who gave him the nickname “Tank” because his head is disproportionately bigger than his body.
