The MMA community looked in awe when Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis flexed his newly acquired abs on the weigh-in day of UFC 291. No one thought anything negative about the abs or Lewis’s weight loss to acquire them. However, reports have revealed that Lewis had a blackout trying to reach the weight limit when he fought Sergey Spivak in February. This is why Lewis decided to work on his fitness ahead of UFC 291.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Jeff Mullen made a statement to the MMA News website regarding the matter. He wrote, “The Nevada State Athletic Commission were not made aware of this.” The prevailing understanding remains that the UFC personnel knew about it but failed to report it to the NSAC.

Spivak submitted Lewis in the first round and handed him his third straight loss. Derrick Lewis worked on his fitness and appeared to be in better condition at UFC 291. He hit a flying knee against Marcos Rogério de Lima as soon as the bout started and finished with ground and pound. Age has caught up to Lewis, but his knockout power will always make him a threat in the heavyweight division.

A title shot at this point remains out of reach. Younger fighters like Sergei Pavlovich, Tom Aspinall, Ciryl Gane, and Jailton Almeida are faster and more technical than Lewis. However, if Lewis can get a win over these contenders, he will make a fantastic case for a title shot.

MMA fighters go under the impression that they can compete with a boxer. In an MMA bout, they can destroy any boxer as they will have more tools and techniques to claim victory. However, that may not be the case in a boxing bout, as witnessed in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor bout.

In a boxing bout, a boxer has the advantage. However, an MMA fighter’s knockout power and will should not be underestimated. A boxer once challenged Derrick Lewis and claimed that the Black Beast wouldn’t win against him. However, the Black Beast showed that there is always a puncher’s chance for the MMA fighter.

Once Lewis wobbled the boxer, he landed more strikes devastatingly and knocked him out completely. Watching the action between a boxer and Lewis, Francis Ngannou should land a knockout strike and land quicker to defeat Tyson Fury in their bout in Saudi Arabia.
