Paddy Pimblett is emerging as one of the biggest stars of the UFC – a fighter whose popularity can transcend the realm of MMA, and enter the popular discourse.
That being said, Pimblett needs to back his talk up with results in order to sustain this level of stardom. And, that might not have been the case this past PPV event – at UFC 282, Pimblett took on Jared Gordon, and going into the fight, he was the clear favourite.
However, Gordon put on a masterful show, as not only did he sting Pimblett a couple of times with powerful jabs to the chin, but he also had approximately six minutes of ground and fence control in a 15 minute bout. Hence, when the results were read out – the whole arena, and the MMA world delved into shock, seeing Paddy Pimblett declared the unanimous winner. Additionally, all three judges had the fight 30-27.
After the fight, Pimblett sat down with Dominick Cruz and Anthony Smith to discuss what he thought was a clear victory, to which Cruz said, “So, as fighters, its not our job to decide who wins or loses… if somebody tells me somebody has six and a half minutes control time on me, I would, in my own position, wonder, ‘Okay, yeah, maybe I could see how you would think the other person won.’ You don’t think that at all?”
To this, Paddy Pimblett staunchly replied, “No, I don’t.” Despite his defiance in the face of criticism, Cruz’s succinct explanation had Pimblett sit up and take notice.
Paddy Pimblett might need to put on an elite showing in his next fight to start climbing the lightweight rankings
Unfortunately, for Pimblett, his main goal of coming out to fight in Las Vegas remains unfulfilled as of now – in taking on Jared Gordon, the Liverpool native would have hoped to dismantle the American and start his ascent up the rankings.
That, however, will probably not be the case – to make an impression on the rankings, Pimblett might need to beat yet another solid candidate, or even take on someone within the rankings already. As things stand, it doesn’t look like the 27-year-old is ready to take on the who’s who of the lightweight division.
That being said, it would be unwise to begin doubting Paddy Pimblett’s credentials – after all, he is a Cage Warriors winner. And, for all intents and purposes, a couple of other fights which are not PPV mainstays might just do the trick. Could a rematch against Jared Gordon be on the cards, as well? MMA fans shall soon find out.
