Colby Covington gears up for a welterweight title bout against Leon Edwards at UFC 296. The 17-3 welterweight has not fought since March 2022. As expected, former US President Donald Trump, a close acquaintance of Covington, will attend the UFC 296 title fight. The fighter confirmed as much recently with a small hiccup.
Trump is an ardent supporter of Covington and of the combat sports industry as a whole. He also maintains close ties to CEO Dana White, who overtly supported his campaign. The Republican Party nominee was last in attendance at UFC 290 and UFC 295. In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Covington mentioned:
You know, the greatest president in history - 45th and soon to be 47th of the United States - Donald J. Trump will be in attendance front row. I was trying to get him to walk out with me and he was really excited to walk out with me. But it's a logistical concern for the UFC and I understand that, you know. I mean the guy comes with a lot of secret service and it's a very big deal...Colby Covington via TMZ Sports
The 45th president made a sensational appearance at UFC 295 in Madison Square Garden. He was accompanied by Kid Rock, Tucker Carlson, and White. Trump is usually escorted by official entourages and security detail, along with White being the familiar head of the promotion and a friend.
Trump, who held tenure from 2017-2021, is eyeing another subsequent run for the office in 2024. He has also hyped up the fight between Covington and Edwards. On the other hand, Covington aims to win the undisputed title for the first time.
