Seeing Sean Strickland lose his title to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 was something enticing for feuding rival Ian Machado Garry. Strickland has defamed the welterweight’s wife on claims of celebrity ensnaring. Weighing in, at a segment with MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani, the fighter recently addressed the matter. He declared that the interpersonal attacks on his wife had ‘stung’ but ultimately made the relationship stronger.
Concurrently, Garry also called out Strickland, vowing to give him a hiding. While such challenges for the octagon are feasible and understandable, Du Plessis would not stand for a preemptive critique of his first title win. In a recent post on X, Garry labeled the title grudge match as a fight between ‘two amateurs’. Here’s what he said on the matter –
Just sloppy boxing. Swinging. Look at this. The fu**ing state of this. Zero technique, just slugging it out now. Oh my God, I feel like I’m watching two amateurs fight. Oh my God...Oh, my dear Jesus Christ. If I ever have a fight like that, please tell me to retire.Ian Garry via X
Garry is to square off with Geoff Neal at UFC 298 on Feb. 17 in Anaheim, California. Earlier this year, he unveiled a three-fight hit list for 2024, with Strickland as an obvious choice on it. Hence, comes the challenge. But retorting his worrisomeness on having such a fight, here’s what ‘Stillknocks’ wrote on his IG account:
Don't worry, you never will.Dricus Du Plessis via X
The welterweight is a long way from title contention at the 185lbs weight class. Especially, considering the recent flack Garry has caught on for self-promotional tendencies and interpersonal squabbles. Concurrently, it is abundantly clear where Du Plessis stands on such a challenge.
Ian Garry and wife react to internet trolls for defamation
Ian Machado Garry was very satisfied with UFC 297’s result for the headliner title bout. Dricus Du Plessis had edged out a split decision win over Sean Strickland. Feuding against Strickland for quite a while now, Garry naturally holds no goodwill towards the enemy. The welterweight took to social media to post a video mocking the title affair.
But things were not so passive a while back. The feud had started over Garry’s wife Layla Anna-Lee and her 2010 publication called ‘How to be a WAG‘. Despite her indicating the ’11-page audible-only satire story’ was a mockery, fans had chosen to berate the couple.
Fuelled by the likes of Strickland and Colby Covington, many had labeled Garry as a victim of ensnaring from his wife. Here’s what 40-year-old Anna-Lee had to say about the matter –
Layla Anna-Lee’s book was part of a satire segment during the 2010 FIFA season. The British sports presenter also worked at the Best Fifa Football Awards in October 2017.
In a plethora of IG reels, she lamented that MMA content creators cannot comprehend the broader spectrum on a topic, and instead revert to insults. She also weighed in on the sheer ‘volume’ of death threats she got in days, due to the matter.
Recently, Garry has nudged being in a stronger place due to all of it, as he awaits to hash it out with feuding peer Covington and middleweight Strickland.
