Dustin Poirier believes Khabib Nurmagomedov was better than him but Justin Gaethje was not better. Hence, this loss hurts him more.

Dustin Poirier suffered defeat by Justin Gaethje via knockout in the ‘BMF’ title match at UFC 291. Since 2016, it was the first time Dustin Poirier lost in a contest for the non-lightweight championship. Although he lost, Poirier is still convinced that he is superior to Gaethje, which has made it harder for him to accept the defeat than his loss to the former UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
During his latest interview with Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, Dustin said: “Khabib was better than me. I lost Saturday to somebody who I think I’m better than.” “Yeah. Yeah. I was away from home for nine weeks in training camp. I dieted 11 weeks, sacrificed so much, was really focused, man, was really, really focused, and felt great, the best I’ve ever felt. Honestly, the best I’ve ever felt.” Poirier added.
According to Dustin Poirier, his training camp leading up to the fight was amazing and he felt great going into the fight. Poirier mentioned that he has no excuses and everything was perfect but he still lost which is hard to digest.
Jorge Masvidal’s hilarious response after losing a $100k bet on Dustin Poirier

Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier are very good friends and have trained together for years inside the American Top Team gym. Going into the fight, Masvidal was supporting Poirier to win the BMF title and bring the belt to ATT as Masvidal did once.
However, that didn’t go as the plan and it cost Masvidal a hefty sum. “I’m making wagers that I probably shouldn’t,” Masvidal told TNT Sports after UFC 291. “I put $100,000 on D.P, on Dustin Poirier. Kids I’m sorry, you’ve got to go to public school now.”
In all seriousness, Masvidal did give Dustin the credit and how he wanted the ‘Diamond’ to win the fight. “Dustin looked in the best shape ever and obviously he’s my teammate so I wanted the world for him, I wanted him to win but hats off to Justin. Great fight and a great competitor always. I’m just hurt. I wanted my boy to get that belt,” said Masvidal.
Masvidal was inside the T-Mobile Arena when the fight took place and was disappointed by the results but his respect for Justin Gaethje was still there and he congratulated him for the performance.
