“I want to fight” Dustin Poirier itches to make an incredible return to the Octagon

Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier has been on the sidelines for over 7 months now. The Louisiana native was last seen in the cage when he faced off against Brazilian Lightweight snd former Champion Charles Oliveira for the Lightweight Championship. He would come up short in this venture and was submitted by Oliveira early round 3.

After the fight Dustin said that he may have to contemplate where his career goes from there on as this was attempt number 2 where he failed to secure the undisputed gold. Though the Diamond would hint at retirement, a few nudges from long-time rival Nate Diaz would push all the right buttons with Poirier. Although the Diaz callout didn’t lead up to anything but trash talk, it was clear then on, that Dustin still has some miles left on the Gas Tank.

At UFC 274, when Charles Oliveira was stripped of the title due to a near weight miss, the landscape of the lightweight division would be shaken up again. Contenders rallied to be the one who faced Oliveira (Now demoted to the no. 1 contender) to capture the vacant belt. Fighters like Islam and Dariush could argue a spot based on their winning streaks, while Michael Chandler had a brutal and flash KO to his name that would help him get a rematch with Charles, Dustin had nothing to show for it.

Poirier found success in the opening round of his fight against Charles

Since his previous fight was a loss to the champ himself, he would need another fight to prove he still belonged at the top of the division. Today the Diamond took to Twitter and made sure the man in charge, know that the Diamond wants in on the action.

He said, “I want to fight” a simple but poignant message to any and all in the division. While he has hinted interest in a money fight with Nate Diaz, it is unclear due to Nate’s contract if that fight will ever happen. Poirier has also hinted that Michael Chandler wouldn’t fight him or dare to call him out.

Other probable fights for the former Interim Champion include a grudge match against former teammate Colby Covington as Poirier has also hinted a desire to move up a weight class. Who do you think stands in between Dustin and another title shot?
