Dustin Poirier was impressed by the performance of Francis Ngannou against Tyson Fury. Now, he shared his thoughts on the fight. Poirier gave props to Ngannou for his showdown in Saudi Arabia against one of the greatest boxers to ever do it. Although Ngannou lost a close split decision to Fury, Poirier considered it a win for the mixed martial arts community.
Dustin Poirier said that accomplishing what Ngannou had done after starting to train relatively late was astonishing. Poirier was a boxing fan and he understood the level of what Ngannou had accomplished. Considering that Ngannou knocked down the lineal WBC champion on his boxing debut, here is what Poirier said:
To see a mixed martial artist who had a short time in his mixed martial arts career – he started later in life, and to see him go in there and not only compete but arguably win the fight is incredible...I mean, that’s a win for mixed martial arts. It shows we are well versed in all aspects of combat, and we [already knew] that. It was a win.Dustin Poirier (via MMAFighting)
Francis Ngannou went toe-to-toe with the undefeated Tyson Fury and shocked the whole combat sports world and Poirier was no different. However, He mentioned that although he couldn’t watch the fight live, he had followed it nonetheless. Moreover, Poirier was happy for his former UFC colleague.
Currently, Dustin Poirier is at a crossroads in his MMA career. He lost his previous fight to Justin Gaethje and subsequently lost his chance to fight for the lightweight title. Now, he had hinted at moving up a weight class. But, one thing is for sure, he is at the final run of his fighting career. With a record of 29-8, he has had one of the most illustrious MMA careers.
Throwback to the renowned rivalry of Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor
Dustin Poirier’s rivalry with Conor McGregor was known to the whole world. Everything started when they fought for the first time in September 2014. The Irishman was on his way to superstardom when he won his fight against Poirier by knockout in the very first round.
Although this fight took place in the featherweight division, years later, they fought a couple more times in the lightweight division.
They fought for the second time in 2021. It was the way for the return of ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor. He had won his fight against Donald Cerrone and squared up with Dustin Poirier. But, the result was not in favor of McGregor as Poirier knocked the Irishman out in the second round. He had avenged his loss after years. This set up a trilogy bout between the two.
The trilogy went down immediately as Conor McGregor wanted to avenge the loss sooner. The buildup to this fight was heated as the Irishman insulted the ‘Diamond’ time and time again. But once more Dustin Poirier won the fight as a result of McGregor injuring his leg at the end of the first round.
A disappointing end to the trilogy. Since then, we have yet to see McGregor in the Octagon. On the other hand, Poirier lost his title fight against Charles Olivera and now he’s sitting on a loss against Justin Gaethje.
