Dustin Poirier attended UFC Vegas 82 as fellow Lousiana native Brendan Allen headlined the card. Allen would submit Paul Craig to earn his fourth consecutive rear-naked choke victory. Allen gave a shoutout to Poirier that motivated him. Poirier gave an interview with ESPN MMA’s Megan Olivi after the event where he talked about Conor McGregor among other things.
Olivi asked about his future plans and potential opponents. Poirier was happy to fight anyone. Moreover, he was particularly interested in fighting at UFC 300. However, he was ready to fight an up-and-coming fighter if the fight made sense. The question of fighting Conor McGregor came up during the interview. This is what he said:
We'll see. I probably would try to shut him up once and for all. But even if I slap his ass around again, he's still going to be chatting. So we'll see....... That's a huge fight. Two in one against him. I don't really see another reason for it, but it'd be a huge fight.Dustin Poirier via ESPN MMA.
Poirier’s last fight was a second-round KO loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291. The fight headlined UFC 291 and the duo contended for the BMF title. Former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal was present at the event to place the belt on the winner. Apparently, Masvidal bet big on Poirier and lost a huge chunk of money at UFC 291.
Poirier and Gaethje have fought twice for the undisputed title but lost to undisputed champions Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Gaethje is on the cusp of a third crack at the title. He is waiting for the winner of the fight between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira. Poirier could fight at UFC 300. However, McGregor might not be his opponent.
Dustin Poirier explains the state of the top heavy lightweight division
The UFC’s lightweight division is one of the most talented divisions in the promotion. However, the top fighters in the division fight amongst themselves to keep their rankings safe. Many have tried to break into the top 5 rankings but were unsuccessful.
Dustin Poirier, in his interview with Megan Olivi, mentioned the situation. This is what said about it:
The lightweight division's been super competitive and kind of top-heavy for the last, I don't know how many years, but a long time. And we can't just keep fighting the same guys over and over again. So yeah, the new crop's going to keep coming in. They're going to sink or swim, and we'll see what's up.
Rafael Fiziev lost the opportunity to crack the top 5 against Justin Gaethje and Mateusz Gamrot lost the chance against Beneil Dariush. Dariush will be headlining UFC Austin against up-and-comer Arman Tsarukyan. Tsarukyan gave the toughest fight for Islam Makhachev in his UFC career.
