Dustin Poirier provides his honest assesment of Charles Oliveira’s weight miss! The headliner fight between Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje met with an upset two days prior to the actual event when the Brazilian champ couldn’t make weight at the official weigh-ins. Oliveira was taxed with the belt for being 0.5 pounds overweight for his 155-pound championship bout. That was the first time in the history of the promotion that a champ lost his belt to the weighing scale.

Charles defeated Justin in the 3rd minute of the opening round via rear-naked choke. While Justin dropped Charles two times, Charles eventually got a hold of Justin and his ground game was too much to handle for Justin. While Charles might not be the official lightweight champion, he has proved why he is certainly the best lightweight on the planet.

Oliveira has extended his winning streak to 11 and has finished Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Kevin Lee, and many others during that stretch. Charles has been stripped of his Lightweight title but is now the number 1 contender for the belt and he will fight for the belt in his next outing.

Many fighters presented his views on the controversy, and Oliveira’s former opponent, Dustin Poirier provided his honest assessment of the situation. Talking to Teddy Atlas on his podcast, he said, “We need to be on digital scales so there’s no grey area. You can’t have a guy there tapping a weight-balance scale and it’s kind of balancing, and he just says it’s a half pound or whatever. We need exact numbers. You get on a digital scale, it shows up on the screen, that’s your actual weight.”

“I don’t like the fact that these guys are tapping this balance scale. They weren’t carrying him out. He wasn’t stumbling around,” Poirier added. “He’s always really lean, and he’s long and tall, so he looks slim. He’s a big guy, but he didn’t look like he needed to be helped. He still had life in his body. He could have, it looked like, tried to lose more weight. It’s a championship fight.”
