These days Khabib Nurmagomedov acts in a coaching capacity at the AKA (American Kickboxing Academy). The Dagestani fighter remains a dream opponent for many fighters. Sergio Pettis had a question asked to him by a fan on X.
Nurmagomedov has notable victories over Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaetthje, Al Iaquinta, Michael Johnson, and others. Pettis had talked about not getting cut in any of his 29 pro-MMA outings. He has a pro record of 23 wins and six losses. This instigated the challenge of a literal blood match. One fan asked him to participate against Khabib in a first-blood match. This is what Sergio Pettis replied:
I would rather do Ramadan every day for the rest of my life than to fight Khabib...Sergio Pettis via X
Pettis, the former Bellator bantamweight titleholder is #2 in Bantamweight official rankings and #10 in men’s pound-for-pound. Pettis took on interim champion Patchy Mix in a title unification bout at Bellator 301. He lost the gold in way of a second-round ‘super slick’ rear-naked choke. His name is one of the few thrown in the infamous “Khabib Nurmagomedov challenge.”
“The Eagle” is a two-time combat Sambo champion and a ProFC veteran. Correspondingly, Fight Matrix ranks him as the #1 lightweight of all time. At the time of his retirement, Nurmagomedov was the #1 pound-for-pound until 2021. These make the prospect of facing Nurmagomedov such a big feat.
Sergio Pettis weighs in on UFC threatening to drop flyweights
It is no surprise that a successful combative sporting promotion such as UFC would have its fumbles and muddles. Many past fighters have now transitioned to other promotions, such as Bellator MMA. Sergio Pettis, whose name recently got thrown into the mix to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov, is one such example.
Once upon a time, the UFC almost cut the flyweight division. Pettis had weighed in on UFC dropping its entire 125lb lineup. Major fighters, including Brandon Moreno and Alexandre Pantoja, would never have become a champion if the UFC cut the division. This is what Sergio Pettis said at the time to Ariel Helwani:
I feel like I was in this situation before. When I was in the flyweight division for the UFC and I was fighting Jussier Formiga, and I found out like two days before I fought him that the UFC was thinking about getting rid of the whole flyweight division. It threw off my mentality. I was like, ‘Why do I even care about winning this fight if I’m not even going to be able to get a shot at the title?’ I feel like I’ve learned from that...Sergio Pettis via MMA Hour
Pettis has shared a similar sentimental dread about the flyweight division, speaking to MMA Hours’ Ariel Helwani, as seen in the video above. While the division was not let off from UFC, substantial conflict took place in the fighter. Subsequently, he lost the fight to Jussier Formiga.
