Tagged with an awesome commentary team starring MMA’s premier fan Joe Rogan, UFC 278 was a stellar card by all means. From top to bottom, it had great fights. However, it was the main card, and specifically, the main and co-main fights that took the whole world by storm. Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and other platforms were ablaze with reactions to Edwards’ win over Usman, and Rockhold smearing blood on Costa’s face.
Apart from the action within the fights, another incident has caught the eye of viewers, which doesn’t involve any fighter, but longest serving UFC commentator Joe Rogan!
Joe Rogan is extremely popular – he has expanded his influence over the social milieu over the last decade, covering not only UFC events, but also hosting Fear Factor and having the biggest podcast in the world, The Joe Rogan Experience. The multiple channels Rogan is found in increase his imprint across our screens, and as a result, visual media is rife with his clips. For instance, Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier and Jon Anik’s wild reactions to Kamaru Usman’s knockout of Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 took the internet by storm.
“He thought it was a JRE Pod” Comment hits out at Joe Rogan in the aftermath of the Dvalishvili-Aldo bout

Merab Dvalishvili and Jose Aldo took on each other this past weekend, at UFC 278. The result was majorly seen as an upset, with many people expecting Aldo to use his striking prowess to get either a finish or the judges’ nod.
This was far from the case, however – Dvalishvili controlled “Junior” for most of the 3 rounds, not letting him unleash his powerful jab. A commentator in question, Rogan called out Aldo’s lacklustre display, saying “He never felt alive.”
But, it was his post-fight behaviour that caught the eyes of many viewers. After announcing the judges’ decision, Dvalishvili and Aldo were seen embracing on the canvas in a show of mutual respect, clasping their hands together – just as true martial artists would. Joe Rogan saw an exchange of words and decided to put his mic in – to catch the dialogue between the two. What came out, is extremely unclear, but credit to Rogan for trying. An instagram post mocking his behaviour is posted below:
While some give him props for attempting to catch the exchange, some believe that jutting the mic next to them while they were clearly exchanging private words was utterly unnecessary. “Nah, that’s just disrespectful bro.” commented one user under the post in question, while contrastingly, another wrote, “Man’s just doing his job.”
This is not the first time Joe’s caught flak for his behaviour regarding the octagon interviews. On his podcast, he clarified that he doesn’t interview fighters who have been knocked out. Yet, on multiple occasions, he has been caught in a crossfire trying to navigate backlash regarding violation of his own rule. Two famous incidents jump to mind – firstly, Rogan tried to give Daniel Cormier “a fair chance to explain himself” after Jon Jones had knocked him out in their second fight.
Similarly, last year, following Conor McGregor’s gnarly loss (Doctor Stoppage/TKO), Rogan sat down with him to let him share his thoughts. These are isolated incidents, and Joe Rogan has explained his reasoning behind both, albeit, he has still received heavy criticism for both.
