UFC Middleweight Derek Brunson has caught the eye of fans for a social media post where he bragged about paying less child support. Brunson, who last fought against Jared Cannonier at UFC 271 which ended in a knockout loss, has not fought for a year. However, that has not stopped the goofy middleweight from constantly garnering the fans’ attention.
Brunson has been more involved in social media than anywhere else. Recently he was seen addressing the fact that he was paying 1000$ a month in child support, but his ex took him to court. The new verdict came in favour of Brunson, who only has to pay 222.63$ from now on. Brunson was seen laughing about it in his social media post, triggering the fans unfavourably. Brunson is an advocate for preventing domestic violence, he regularly posts several TikTok skits on his social media. He even raised funds for Cain Velasquez’s bail money last year. Considering all of this, fans were quick to express their feelings on social media.
Last year, Derek Brunson was very close to a title shot after gathering a five-fight winning streak. He defeated the likes of the late Elias Theodorou, Ian Heinisch, Edmen Shahbazyan, Kevin Holland and Darren Till. Brunson fought Jared Cannonier at UFC 271 with the No. 1 Contender status on the line. Had he won, he would have certainly been close to the UFC Middleweight Championship. Unfortunately, the loss hurt his chances of earning a title shot.
Brunson is now scheduled to face Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 285, a card headlined by the return of Jon Jones to capture the UFC Heavyweight Championship. At this stage of Brunson’s career, it is unclear whether he can put on another winning streak to potentially earn a title shot. Nevertheless, a win against Du Plessis can convince everyone that he can still perform at a higher level.
