UFC Vegas 73 featured a strawweight main event fight between Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill. Dern came into the bout with a loss against Yan Xiaonan in 2022. She needed a win over a durable fighter like Hill to remain in contention for a title fight. Fortunately, she managed to win a decision at UFC Vegas 73.

Mackenzie Dern landed at a 72.6 percent strike rate against Hill. She managed to mix up her striking with takedowns to find success in the fight. She landed 120 significant strikes from 210 attempts. Dern has massively improved her fight game since the loss against Yan. The fight went all five rounds, and the judges scored (49–43, 49–44, 49–44) in favor of Dern.

During the fight week, Dern talked about her difficult personal life. She said, “I feel like so many things are trying to bring me down. I changed managers, the divorce, the gym. There’s so much stuff going on that I don’t want something to take me off of my course. To stay on course I need to have a plan.” Dern was not mentally comfortable and decided to change everything for the fight against Angela Hill.

Dern also went through a divorce in 2022. It affected her in the fight against Yan. After defeating Hill, she will fight a top contender again to push for a title shot. Hill was on a two-fight winning streak before the fight. However, a loss puts her further away from the top 5 of the strawweight rankings.

Mackenzie Dern fought Angela Hill in the main event of UFC Vegas 73. Both fighters needed a win to move up in the rankings and face more challenging competition for a chance at the title.
